Its engrossed in African tradition to serve food or give people food at any function because
us Africans believe our brotherhood/sisterhood is made stronger by food or if we share a
meal. This is why some Africans will complain about the quality and or quantity of food at a
funeral because, nomatter the tragedy, the host family still has to give us food and it still has
to be proper nomatter the circumstances.
It is true the African in most of us might actually like to eat at any function, but it is also true
that even though we like rice and chicken or beef stew (not forgetting the famous Coleslaw
Salad) we sometimes wish some meals at some events were lighter. It is a noble thing, infact
it is standard to serve rice at a 2-hour book launch event, because, as I alluded to, we, like it
so much. However, such a meal will be heavy for our stomachs and if we would have it our
own way, we would prefer to have a lighter meal for such small events.
This then should be the rule of thumb when having a function, small non-hectic, non-formal
functions like cocktail hour at a wedding, small workshops, product or book launches,
afternoon tea parties, 2 to 3-hour functions must have light food to allow the guest time to eat
and mingle at the same time because truth be told, our African Favorite meal requires that
we sit down and properly use our hands.

That being said, the next question will then be, what food must we serve, the simple answer
is, finger foods, what is finger food, you may want to know. By definition, finger food is: food
conveniently served to be eaten using fingers. These. Include, mini pies, mini pizzas,
samoosas, half moons, sausage rolls and other pastries like doughnuts, cupcakes, muffins
etc or meats like lunch meats, drumsticks, meatballs etc. Serving these foods will allow
guests to eat while mingling with other guests without the pressure that comes with having a
sit-down meal like rice and chicken.
In case you’re having a small function, you do not want to subject your guests to a sit-down
meal, here are some 5 finger foods that will definitely steal the show at any function
- Mini sausage rolls – these are little rolls that are made from pie pastry but they have a
sausage in the middle. Usually, a people’s favourite because it contains a
a considerable amount of meat. - Mini Pies – another fan favourite as it is full of flavour and is not a hectic option that
requires both hands. A guest can nibble on it while holding a drink in the other hand
or even have a free hand. - Mini Pizza – people like pizza, and having it in bite-size format at an event is like
having the best of both worlds. A scrumptious meal and time to network and or
socialise with other guests. - Half moons – when in doubt about what to serve your guests, always serve half
moons. They are a scrumptious sandwich that is shaped to denote a half-moon. They
are usually laden with different kinds of fillings from crunchy vegetables to meat and
they are easy to serve and eat taking away the pressure to eat them in a sit-down
setting. - Samoosas – many chefs, caterers and foodprenuers swear by this finger food. It is
rich in texture and flavour and it is easy to eat in an informal setup especially if you still want to remain poised after eating. It’s light, it’s tasty and it’s easy to serve and eat.
This sandwich is folded usually into a triangle and it can be served at any function
that demands that you serve a light meal. Bear in mind you can’t give people one
samosa because as previously alluded to, we are creatures mainly enticed by size
and portions.

In conclusion, while it is true that these finger foods will steal the show, it is also true that
quantity matters because Africans will possibly not be impressed if they come to your
function and be given one samosa and one mini pie. You will need to serve them in numbers
to pacify our critiquing nature as Africans.
