It’s difficult to foster a new culture in older people because in most cases they already have a working formula and there is probably little to no reason why they might want to change it. Domestic tourism in Zimbabwe is still in need of improvement. However, before we encourage you to visit Matopos or Malilangwe in Chiredzi, you can always start just where you are, because after all charity begins at home. That being said, Harare residents, you’re on my radar today.
In case you didn’t know, exploring parks and reserves in Harare and its surrounding areas is a delightful experience that allows one to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of Zimbabwe’s wildlife. From lush greenery to majestic animals, there is so much to discover and enjoy in these natural habitats.
Harare Gardens
One of the most popular parks in Harare is Harare Gardens, a serene oasis in the heart of the city. This park boasts beautiful flower beds, towering trees, and well-manicured lawns, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic with friends and family. Visitors can also enjoy the various bird species that call the gardens home, adding to the peaceful ambience of this urban retreat.

Harare Botanical Gardens
The proof is in the title, botanical!! This Botanical Garden is popular for its picturesque greenery and beautiful flowers. Patrons usually chose this because, even though it’s in Harare, its setup is all about peace and tranquillity. It’s far from the hustle and bustle of the city a feature it was awarded mainly by its size. The 68-hectare Botanical garden is so peaceful and ideal for picnics and other leisure activities like strolling and exploring the park which showcases 90% of the different ecological habitats that are found in Zimbabwe.
For those looking to experience a more immersive wildlife encounter, Mukuvisi Woodlands is the place to be. This nature reserve is home to a variety of animals, including giraffes, zebras, and antelopes, as well as a wide array of bird species. Visitors can embark on guided tours through the reserve, learning about the local flora and fauna while enjoying the sights and sounds of the African bush.

Lake Chivero Recreational Park
Just a short drive from Harare lies Lake Chivero Recreational Park, a picturesque destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The park surrounds the tranquil Lake Chivero, offering visitors the opportunity to go fishing, boating, or simply relax by the water’s edge. With stunning views of the lake and its surrounding hills, this park is a great place to unwind and reconnect with nature.

While at the dam, revellers can actually engage in social activities such as canoeing, horse riding and other water sports, nature walks etc. However, you can also take your time and see the animals found at the park which include zebra, impala, pangolin, porcupine and tsessebe among others animals found at the Haka Game Park inside the Cleveland Dam Recreational Park.
Domboshava National Park
One of the known sacred areas in Zimbabwe, this park gives so much depth and structure to the African religion, culture and history. The park boasts of a huge Granite hill with a 360-degree view of the village beneath and a Rock Art place. Trails, mud pools, an interpretive centre and a naturally scenic view of the place are some of the things to look forward to when visiting this place.

Kuimba Shiri Bird Sanctuary
We might as well add bird watching to this list because, hate it or love it, it is one of the relaxing activities one can engage in, in Harare without breaking the bank. There is nothing to add to this list except the fact that you will possibly encounter over 400 birds!!
Lion and Cheetah Park
Well, fancy yourself some predator experience? What says predator more than the ultimate predators lions and cheetahs. Those willing to interact with lions and cheetahs but not in a game park vehicle are catered for at this establishment just a few kilometres along the Harare Bulawayo Highway. You can find all the lion and cheetah fun(if that’s a possibility) at this park.
Another place you can do some fun activities while immersed in ultimate nature. You can enjoy, picnicking, and water activities like canoeing, if you fancy some time out, you can actually camp at the premises and do some fishing among other interactive sports. The truth is, it’s all up to you how you want to explore and enjoy this gift of nature.
