Read The Fine Print: Car Insurers Won’t Cover These

In Zimbabwe, very few people have signed a contract to insure their car because the majority of us just do it over the phone through some agents not even knowing what we are getting ourselves into. While that arrangement offers a lot of us convenience since it’s done virtually with little to no paperwork, and little to no accountability on the part of the agents who work on a commission basis hoping to make a quick buck, it is always good to follow the proper procedures and get yourself into a contract knowing the details of what you are agreeing to.

In most cases, we all have a vague idea of why some insurance claims are rejected by insurers. We know insurers will not cover damages or losses caused by or during:

  1. Acts of God – usually natural disasters like earthquakes, storms cyclones or floods etc
  2. Rioting or picketing or protest
  3.  Policy Lapses

However, these are some of the things that will make some insurers not pay out claims in case of a loss:

  • Unapproved Modifications. Any modifications to the car that weren’t disclosed or approved by the insurer, such as engine modifications or altered suspension. This means you need to incorporate that in the value of your vehicle when paying for insurance, if you want it covered.
  • Driving Under the Influence.  Accidents that occur when the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Unlicensed or Unauthorized Drivers. If the car was driven by someone not listed on the policy or without a valid driver’s license.
  • Negligence or Recklessness. Accidents caused by reckless driving, such as street racing or driving at excessive speeds.
  •  Misrepresentation. Providing false information during the insurance application process, such as incorrect driving history or failing to disclose previous accidents.
  • Wear and Tear. Claims for damages due to normal wear and tear, or mechanical failures not caused by an accident or covered event.
  • Delayed Reporting. Failing to report an accident promptly or within the specified timeframe required by the insurance policy.

These are some common reasons why car insurers might reject a claim. Its good to know these things so that you make necessary arrangements or adjustments and carefully review your insurance coverage and follow the terms and conditions outlined in their policy to avoid claim denials.
